What Are The Symptoms of Kidney Stones?

Most of the time you won’t feel anything if you have kidney stones. This is because small grain-like kidney stonesĀ  usually pass through your urine without your being aware of them.. But when the stones are not flushed out when you pass water and start to grow large, they could cause you discomfort. Here also you may not feel any pain in the intial stages when the kidney stone is not big enough to cause discomfort in your urinary tract. However, when kidney stone becomes large then alone you would feel its presence through various symptoms.

So how do you know you have kidney stones?

The first indication that most people have that they may have kidney stones is the pain they feel. While intense continual pain is the most common sign of kidney stones in the urinary system there are other symptoms also.

  • Have you started having sudden pain in your back or side (shaded areas in theĀ  image) that doesn’t seem to respond to usual medicines?

  • Do you pass blood with your urine?

  • Does your urine smell bad or seems to be cloudy?

  • Do you feel burning sensation when you pass urine?
    If you say yes to any of these questions, then chances are that you may have a kidney stone problem. Other signs that go with these symptoms are vomitting, chills and fever. If you have these symtoms, it is the time you should go to your doctor to find out if you do have kidney stone problem and what to do about it.

    How the doctor finds out if you have a kidney stone problem?

    As kidney stone are related to your urinary system, the first thing that most doctors usually advise is urine and blood test, and sometimes angiography, to find out if your problem is indeed caused by kidney stones.

    When my son started having sudden pain in his left side, the doctor suspected the cause to be the presence of a kidny stone in his system. However, to make sure of his diagnosis he asked him to undergo all these tests which confirmed his suspicion.

    The blood and urine tests give indications as to what kind of kidney stone a patient has. This helps the doctor to prescribe the appropriate treatment. Because all kidney stones are not the same. There are at least four kinds of kidney stones which need different kinds of kidney stone treatments. For example, medication for the calcium kidney stone, which is the most common of the four, would not with other kind of kidne stone, say a uric acid stone.


    What Are Kidney Stones Treatments?

    There are various kinds of kidney stone treatments available. All these treatments aim at removal of the kidney stone.

    One of the most painless way to do that is dissolving the kidney stones into small grain like fragments which would pass through the urine. This is what the doctors would try to do by prescribing some oral medicine to help passing the kidney stones in the normal course of passing urine, if the kidney stones are comparatively small in size or are not lodged firmly in the urinary tract.

    However, if the stones are bigger they need other kinds of treatment dependin upon their size and where they are lodged in the urinary tract.

    In the past the only way for removal of kidney stones was by way of surgery. But now various treatments exist which do not involve any incision of your body.
